Eric & Geeta: A Maharashtrian Wedding by the Lake
Schedule a free callRHIPO Photography
Geeta is Maharashtrian and Eric is American, and their wedding brought both families together beside a lake in Washington. It began with a Mehndi and a small Sangeet under the trees, continued the next day with a traditional Maharashtrian ceremony on the lawn, and ended with a reception, formal dances and a very full dance floor.
We filmed every part of it. The photographs on this page are stills from our 4K film.

The film
We also cut four short films from the wedding, one for each part of the celebration:
The Mehndi, under the garlands
The celebrations started outdoors, beneath strings of pink flower garlands, with Geeta’s friends and family gathered around her as her mehndi was applied.

A small Sangeet by the water
The Sangeet was small and close: family and friends dancing on the paving beside the lake, with lanterns along the edge and the trees all around.

The evening on the lake
While the Sangeet went on, the groom’s side spent the evening on the water, on a pontoon boat decorated with marigolds. A few of them went in for a swim.

Getting ready
On the wedding morning Geeta got ready in a yellow saree and her bridal jewellery, with her family close by.

The Maharashtrian wedding
The ceremony took place on the lawn by the lake, with the men of the family in traditional caps and the women in bright sarees. Geeta walked in with her family.
In a Maharashtrian wedding the couple first stand on either side of the Antarpat, a cloth held up between them while the Mangalashtak are sung. When it is lowered, they see each other and exchange garlands. Before the day we went through the order of the rituals with the family, so Eric’s side knew what was coming and we were in position for each moment.

Both families, in their own words
Part of the film is given over to the people who know Geeta and Eric best. Between the ceremony and the reception we sat family and friends down by the lake and asked them to say a few words to the couple.

The reception and the formal dances
The reception was indoors with the lake outside the windows. There were speeches, napkins waved in the air, the formal dances, and then a dance floor that stayed full to the end.
